What exactly is a nouns card???

Soundcard... similar to the Ronseal adverts, does exactly what it say on the box.

The soundcard carries a (simple) synthesizer on it that turns computer instructions into billow forms (sounds) and amplifies them for output to speakers. More upmarket ones enjoy more features that mean the computer instructions they adopt have fancier results... approaching having record violin waveforms... and can handle more channel and so on, but the idea remains one and the same.

In a laptop 'soundcard' is a misnomer... the synthesizer chipset is soldered onto the main board and can't be replaced. It's not a separate card that plugs into an adapter.
