The F stands for Function, and lots of them are left over from the days of heavier usage. You can check out function key and their usage here:

F=Function and Alot of programs use your F-keys contained by them. Even windows. Like if you click on your desktop and hit F5 you re-acquaint yourself with it. this will also work on webpages

wow guys, something tells me he already know what the answer is by the first person, so perchance you dont need to answer it. unless as expected, you just want two free points.
F is for Function, the purpose vary according to the software running. For many Windows programs F1 is oblige. During boot some machines use F2 to enter bios, F11 or F12 sometimes select the boot order. Under Linux they are used next to ctrl to select different console screens, similar to command prompt.
